ABANDONED VEHICLE FEE/MULTA POR VEHICULO ABANDONADO

When you sale a vehicle, is very important that you notify DMV, otherwise you would be directly responsable for whatever it happens to the vehicle. So, you have to place a "sold notice". To do this, you can go to any third party o directly to the main office. They put a note in the computer and give you a signed form, so you can keep this for your records.
If you don't do this, and the person who purchase your vehicle leaves it on the street (let's say) then you would need to pay an "abandoned vehicle fee", which is $50.

Why do they suspend my plate?
Even when you have insurance on your vehicle, MVD can suspend your plate. That's because we (the people) have to report MVD that we have insurance. Many times, insurance companies report it, but most of the times they don't. So, MVD send you a letter and you have about 30 days to show them your proof of insurance. If you don't do it then they suspend your plate.
To fix this:
-There is a "suspension date". If you had insurance that date, then you need a letter from your insurance company saying that. This letter is called "no lapse letter". It includes all the information of the vehicle and signature of your insurance agent.
-If you did not have insurance that date, then you need to get an SR22 and regular insurance at any insurance company. You need to pay $50 to MVD, plus whatever it is if you go to a third party.

Otherwise they take your vehicle to the impound and/or give you a ticket.
If they take your vehicle to the impound, you have to get insurance for that vehicle.
-If you don't have a driver license: you can make a power or attorney POA., giving permission to someone who has a driver license to take the vehicle out of the impound.
You can also transfer the vechicle to someone else's name. Or add the someone with a valid driver license to the title. That way you can keep the same plate and is cheaper.
-If your license plate is not current: you can go to any mvd or third party mvd (most of the check cashing provides this kind of services) and renew. If your vehicle needs emission test, then you can request a 3 day permit or a 30 day permit.
Or the final trick would be a 90 day permit. But this one is hard to get, but someone who has a driver license from another state can get it, he can say that he is the new owner and he is taking the vehicle to that state.
